How Often Should You Train a Muscle?
Training frequency looks like a big decision and mostly is not. Once your weekly sets are the same, spreading them over more days changes very little. Frequency is a scheduling tool, not a growth lever.

The short answer
Two sessions per muscle per week is a sensible default. Not because two is magic, but because it is an easy way to fit a reasonable number of weekly sets into a week without any single session becoming enormous.
If you can only train twice a week in total, train the whole body both times. If you train four or five days, split the body so each muscle comes up twice. Three days a week works either way.
The reason that advice is so unfussy is that frequency turns out to be one of the least important decisions in a training week.
Why frequency matters less than it looks
The research here is unusually clean. A review of 22 studies found that strength gains did increase with training frequency, with the effect growing steadily from one session a week up to four or more (Grgic et al., Sports Medicine, 2018).
Then the same authors looked only at the studies that gave both groups the same total weekly work. That difference disappeared.
That one comparison explains almost everything about this topic. Training a muscle four times a week does beat training it once, but not because of the four. It is because someone training four times a week almost always ends up doing more total sets. Hold the sets equal and the schedule stops mattering.
So frequency is not really a growth lever. It is the way you fit your weekly sets into your life. How many sets per week is where the actual dose lives.
What frequency is genuinely good for
It still earns its place, for three practical reasons.
Sessions stay a sensible length. Sixteen sets for your back in one sitting is a long, grim workout, and the last few sets are worse than the first few. Split across two days, they are two normal ones, and you can rest properly between them instead of rushing to finish.
Quality holds up. Late sets in a very long session are performed tired. You do them, they count on paper, and they are not the same sets.
Higher volumes get easier to reach. A review of training volume found that 12 to 20 weekly sets per muscle is a reasonable working range for trained lifters, and noted that higher volumes are easier to complete when they are spread across more sessions (Baz-Valle et al., Journal of Human Kinetics, 2022).
That is the honest case for training a muscle more than once a week: not that the muscle needs the extra visit, but that you are more likely to finish the work.
Picking a schedule
Start from the days you can reliably train, not from a split you read about.

Two things worth noticing. Every row lands on roughly two sessions per muscle without anyone planning it, because that is what falls out of normal splits. And nothing here goes above three, because past that the sets per session get so small that you are mostly warming up.
Pick the row that matches the days you will actually show up, then set your weekly sets, then divide.
Does the "48 hours" rule matter?
The idea that a muscle needs about two days to recover is a reasonable rule of thumb and a bad law.
Recovery time depends on how hard the session was, how much of it was new, how close to failure you went, and how big the muscle is. A punishing leg session takes longer to come back from than a few sets of lateral raises. Soreness is not a good measure either. It tracks unfamiliarity better than it tracks damage, and it fades as you repeat a movement.
In practice, if a muscle feels ready and your numbers are holding, train it. If your performance on that lift is still down several days later, you did too much last time or you are under-recovered generally. Why your lifts stopped progressing works through the causes.
Frequency for one lift, not just one muscle
There is a separate question hiding here. How often should you practise a movement?
Strength is partly a skill. Squatting twice a week gets you better at squatting faster than squatting once, even at the same total sets, because you get more attempts at the pattern. That is a real reason powerlifters run high frequencies on their competition lifts.
It cuts the other way for accessories. Your rear delts do not need skill practice, so how you spread their sets is entirely a matter of convenience.
A practical version: keep the lifts you care about getting good at on a twice-weekly rhythm, and let everything else land wherever it fits.
What actually breaks a schedule
Almost never the split. Usually one of these.
Too many days planned. A five-day plan you hit three times a week is worse than a three-day plan you hit three times, because the five-day version leaves muscles randomly skipped rather than covered.
Sessions too long to face. If a workout takes ninety minutes and you dread the last half hour, the fix is more days or fewer sets, not more willpower.
A split that assumes a perfect week. Life interrupts. A split where every muscle appears twice degrades gracefully when you miss a day. One where each muscle appears once does not.
Choose for the bad weeks, not the good ones.
