How to use the weight plate calculator

  1. Choose kilograms or pounds.
  2. Select your bar: a 20 kg or 45 lb Olympic bar, a 10 kg or 22 lb EZ curl bar, or no bar.
  3. Select every plate size available to you. The 25 kg and 55 lb plates are not selected by default.
  4. If a size is limited, use the dropdown below it to select how many matching pairs are available. Every selected size defaults to unlimited.
  5. Enter the total target weight, including the bar, then calculate.
  6. Load the listed plates on each side of the bar.

Always verify the weight printed on your bar and plates. Equipment can differ from these values, and the calculator cannot inspect the equipment in front of you.

Methodology

The calculator uses the same basic plate loading method as Lift on iOS and Android. It subtracts the selected bar from the target and processes selected plates from largest to smallest. It adds matching pairs (one plate on each side) without exceeding the target or the selected number of pairs.

The arithmetic is exact when the remainder is zero. When a remainder is shown, the calculator displays the load produced by this largest first method and the weight still missing.

Formula

First calculate the weight that must come from plates:

plate weight needed = target weight - bar weight

For each selected plate size, from largest to smallest:

pairs = min(available pairs, floor(remaining weight / (2 x plate weight)))

When availability is unlimited, only the weight determines the number of pairs. Each pair contributes one plate per side, then the calculation continues with the next smaller size.

Worked examples

100 kg with a 20 kg Olympic bar

The plates must contribute 80 kg in total, or 40 kg per side. The result is two 20 kg plates on each side:

20 kg bar + 2 x (20 kg + 20 kg) = 100 kg

225 lb with a 45 lb Olympic bar

The plates must contribute 180 lb in total, or 90 lb per side. The result is two 45 lb plates on each side:

45 lb bar + 2 x (45 lb + 45 lb) = 225 lb

A target that cannot be matched exactly

For 103 kg with a 20 kg bar and a smallest available plate of 1.25 kg, the calculator loads 102.5 kg and reports 0.5 kg remaining. Another 1.25 kg pair would add 2.5 kg and exceed the target.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The target is the total weight, including the bar.
  • Every listed plate is placed on both sides so the bar remains balanced.
  • Availability means matching pairs: one plate on the left and one on the right. It remains unlimited until you choose a finite count.
  • The largest first method does not search every possible combination. With unusual plate sets, another combination could sometimes be closer to the target.
  • The calculator handles arithmetic only. It does not determine whether a load is appropriate for you or whether equipment is rated for it.

Practical guidance

Confirm the labels on the bar and plates before loading. Add the same plates in the same order on both sides, secure them as required by your equipment and gym, and recheck the total before lifting.
