The RPE Scale: What Each Number Actually Means
RPE in the gym runs 6 to 10 and the number is defined by reps left in the tank: RPE 8 means two more were available. Here is the chart, then each value on its own terms, including when it is the wrong number to be training at.

The RPE chart
RPE is a 1 to 10 rating of how close a set was to failure. In lifting only the top of the scale gets used, because the number is defined by the reps you had left.

The mapping below RPE 6 gets vague, and deliberately so. The scale was built to describe proximity to failure, and once you are five or more reps away that estimate stops meaning much. Treat anything below 6 as "not a working set" rather than as a precise number.
Half points, RPE 8.5 and the like, are common in written programs. They are a convention rather than a research finding, and given how imprecise effort estimates are, half a point sits inside the measurement noise. Nothing breaks if you use them, but do not read much into them.
What each RPE means, and when to use it
The chart tells you the definition. What it does not tell you is which number belongs in which part of your training, which is the part that actually changes what you do.
RPE 10
Zero reps left. You could not have completed another rep with the same technique, and the last one was slow.
When it is right. A tested one-rep max. An occasional calibration set, where the point is to find out whether your RPE calls are honest. The last set of an isolation exercise where failure costs you nothing else.
When it is wrong. Almost everywhere else, and particularly on compound lifts early in a session. The evidence that training to failure adds hypertrophy is weak, while the fatigue it creates is real and lands on the rest of your session. How close to failure to train goes through what it actually costs.
RPE 9
One rep left. You are confident there was one more, and equally confident there were not two.
When it is right. Top sets on a main lift when you want a heavy single or double without testing a max. The final set of a hard block. Anywhere you want most of the stimulus without the recovery bill of failure.
When it is wrong. Every set of every exercise. RPE 9 across a whole session is a way of accumulating fatigue faster than you can use it.
RPE 8
Two reps left. Bar speed has slowed noticeably, the set required real intent, and you were not close to failing.
When it is right. This is the workhorse. Most productive training for most people sits at RPE 7 to 9, and RPE 8 is the middle of that. It is hard enough to drive adaptation and light enough to repeat several times a week.
When it is wrong. During a deload, on a technique day, or when you are ramping back after time off. Also on a first set, where leaving three or four reps is usually the better call, because you have four more sets to get through.
RPE 7
Three reps left. The bar is still moving well and the set felt controlled throughout.
When it is right. Volume work where the goal is accumulating quality sets rather than maximum effort per set. Early sets in a session. Speed and technique work on the competition lifts. Returning from a layoff.
When it is wrong. As your only intensity. A program that never goes above RPE 7 leaves stimulus on the table, particularly for strength.
RPE 6
About four reps left. Comfortably fast, clearly submaximal, obviously not a hard set.
When it is right. Deload weeks, warm-up ramps, and skill practice on a lift you are still learning. As a floor: if a prescribed weight comes in at RPE 6 when you wanted 8, that is information, and the next session goes up.
When it is wrong. As working-set intensity for hypertrophy or strength. Growth across a wide range of loads depends on sets ending reasonably close to failure, and four reps in reserve is not close.
How much to trust your own number
Less than the decimal places suggest.
A review pooling around a dozen studies found people underestimate what they have left by roughly one rep on average, and, more surprisingly, that this does not improve with training experience. It does improve closer to failure, on shorter sets, and on later sets of an exercise.
What follows from that:
- Read an RPE call as a band. Your RPE 8 is realistically somewhere between 7 and 9.
- Trust it more on heavy, short sets than on sets of 20.
- Calibrate occasionally. Take one set to genuine failure now and then and compare the reps you actually got against what you predicted at the point you would normally have stopped. That is the only way to find out whether your 2 reps in reserve is really 2.
Bar speed is a useful second opinion. The study that put numbers on this scale also found average velocity tracks RPE closely in both novice and experienced lifters: the nearer you get to failure, the slower the bar moves.
Turning RPE into a weight
The scale describes effort, not load, so on its own it does not tell you what to put on the bar. Two tools close that gap.

Both run on the same idea, that reps completed plus reps in reserve equals reps to failure, and both inherit the accuracy limits above.
Logging it
An RPE value is only useful if it is next to the set it describes. Weight and reps alone cannot distinguish a set of 8 that nearly ended you from a set of 8 with three left, and next session's decision depends on which one happened.

A note on heavy sets: an RPE 9 or 10 on a compound lift means a genuinely near-maximal effort, and a rep you cannot control through a full range of motion is not the rep you intended to do. Stop a set for sudden or severe pain, and if pain persists, worsens, or changes how you move, reduce the load or range of motion and have it assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
