Choose a free tracker around what you want to track
Lift includes the core tools to plan, log, and progress your training for free, alongside calorie and bodyweight tracking. Premium is optional. Boostcamp is worth starting with if your priority is a large free program library and uncapped manual program creation. Hevy and Strong suit lifters who want a dedicated workout log.
We publish Lift, one of the apps below. This comparison uses publisher documentation and Lift's feature inventory and source-defined limits, checked on 7 September 2026. It does not rank usability from hands-on testing, apart from one clearly labeled personal impression of Boostcamp's interface.

A routine or workout is a session template; a Lift split schedules workouts across the week. Compare the number of session templates you need, not just the smallest number in a row. Hevy's graph limit also does not mean older workouts are deleted.
Where Lift's free tier is useful
You can use Lift for your regular training without ever subscribing. The free tier includes workout planning, unlimited logging, previous-set history, RPE logging, and rest timers. It also includes linear, reverse linear, weekly undulating, and 5x5 strength example cycles for individual exercises, plus custom cycles you can save. Food logging includes calories and macros, alongside bodyweight tracking. The free versus Premium breakdown lists the exact creation limits and everything the subscription adds.
Five custom workouts can accommodate, for example, a four-workout upper/lower split. The two-split limit matters when you want more saved schedules, not after your second training day. Unlimited logging lets you repeat those workouts over time.
Premium adds optional automation: AI plan generation from your experience, equipment, goals, and preferences, plus automatic progression targets. You can already follow a free library program, build your own workouts, compare logged sets, and plan changing targets with periodization without paying. See Lift's progression and planning tools.
When another free app fits better
Boostcamp is a strong option for free program choice and custom program creation. Its free plan also lists RPE/RIR logging, rest timers, and a plate calculator. Pro has additional content and analysis, so “free” does not mean every feature is included. Free and Pro comparison.
One personal note: we tried Boostcamp and found the interface cluttered and not especially intuitive. That is our opinion rather than a missing feature, and the program library is still the largest free one here, so give it ten minutes yourself before you decide.
Hevy or Strong may fit if you prefer their logging workflow or already keep your training history there. Manual load selection is also available in Lift; you do not need to enable automatic progression. Check whether four routines in Hevy or three in Strong cover your week. Hevy alternatives, Strong alternatives.
Jefit or Alpha Progression are also options for logging and exercise reference. Jefit's public tier table does not clearly establish free access to its progression engine; Alpha Progression explicitly reserves recommendations for Pro. Do not assume that a free download includes every advertised training feature.
Fitbod is outside this free-tier comparison: its current FAQ describes trial access and a subscription, rather than an ongoing free training tier. If you are leaving it for that reason, see Fitbod alternatives.
What paying would add
A paid app can provide targets, longer-range analysis, reviews, or programming tools. The value depends on which of those you use. Lift's free tier supports planning and following your routine as well as recording it; subscribing is a choice based on the extra features you want.
For a simple manual approach, hold the weight and build reps within a range, then add a manageable increment. The progression guide, calculator, and spreadsheet explain the rule.
Start by putting one normal training week into your chosen app. If you also want to log food and plan multi-week cycles, try Lift's free features. For subscription prices and the broader feature differences, see all seven apps compared.
